O momento da "descida" do leite é um indicador da eficácia das intervenções para apoiar uma iniciação eficaz. Quando ocorre nas primeiras 72 horas após o nascimento, é um elemento importante para prever a adequação do volume de leite às quatro semanas.
O momento da "descida" do leite é o momento após o nascimento em que ocorre a ativação secretória.1,2
A "descida" do leite (ativação secretória) ocorre normalmente entre 24 e 72 horas após a expulsão da placenta.3-5
A ativação secretória pode ser indicada por:
A ativação secretória tardia ( > 72 horas após o nascimento) está associada a riscos de volumes de leite reduzidos persistentes e a uma duração do aleitamento reduzida.3,8
As mulheres que têm uma ativação secretória tardia têm mais 60% de probabilidades de deixar de amamentar às 4 semanas.8
A "descida" do leite é um evento únicoque é fundamental para a síntese continuada do leite materno.9
